Real Ale

Any ale fans on ATD?

After being a lager drinker for many years I've recently got into ale.
Some recommendations would be appreciated.
Here's mine;

Adnams Ghost Ship
Adnams Longboat
Hadley Brewing Co. Moonstone IPA
Fullers Lancer
Fullers Olivers Island
Fullers Wild River
Oakham Ales Citra
Wychwood Hobgoblin Ruby
Wychwood Hobgoblin Gold

Spingo is well worth a try

Dartmoor brewery do some good local stuff. I normaly buy a polypin for christmas 36 pints for about £65.

Jail ale
Dartmoor Ipa.

Or some of the ale from skinners in Truro is ok.

Or how about Cotleigh brewery or Exmoor ales.


My advice is when you go to a good local pub try whats on as a guest ale. The fort on mutley plain is a example of a good place for real ale..

quite like the Salcombe Seahorse thats always available up my local.

Great thing with ale is it depends what you like and depends where you are in the UK and whether the pub looks after its beer.

Bass served direct from the barrel in the Dolpin is always a wiiner

Never had it on tap, only bottled and it's the rear deal

agreed Graiser, it's very good stuff, the Ruby hobgoblin is excellent too.

Missed this thread. Some nice suggestions on here but agree that it really depends where you are in the country/world. One of the great things about real ale is trying out local brews.

Personally often tend to gravitate toward the ESB style between 5 and 6% with some nice malty depth...perhaps something more golden for a session ale. Have been trying some of the more hoppy ones lately but draw the line at US-style grapefruit juice beer.

Anything by Dark Star is always worth a go but I'm not sure their tentacles spread out as far as the south west yet (they are Sussex-based). Of the local brews around Plymouth I always find Jail a good tipple.

Been a while since I sampled Bass off the barrel at The Dolphin but was always tradition to start a Saturday night out there for that very reason....much to the consternation of the lager drinkers!

Slurping homebrew at the moment.

Tried bottled "Proper Job" today, 5.4% and very nice (hic)

had some nice Tavy ale and Salcombe Seahorse in the Fortescue yesterday, May have had some Bass in the Dolphin.

Bass in The Lounge in Stoke village used to be excellent. Many a happy night on there

Been all of the above at some point or other but not always all of them at the same time.

San Miguel, Peroni...marginally better than some of the other pasteurised piss but pasteurised piss nevertheless.

Used to visit pre-match. Bass, ham/egg/chips and some bar billiards.
