Weymouth Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of Lionel Ainsworth.

Lionel brings a wealth of Football League experience and will add to the club’s attacking options. Lionel is available for today’s matchday squad vs Tonbridge Angels.

Lionel is a former England Youth International and has played in the Championship during spells at Derby and Watford, as well as in the Football League with Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United.

In recent seasons Lionel played in the Scottish Premiership for Motherwell between 2013-2017, before joining Plymouth Argyle for two seasons.

Welcome to the Terras Lionel!

Zubars only 32 but hes not done much since leaving here

Zubar signed for Plymouth Argyle in November 2010, and moved on to AFC Bournemouth in September 2011. He was loaned out to Bury in January 2013, Port Vale in September 2014, York City in November 2014. He returned to York on loan in August 2015, but returned to AFC Bournemouth after he suffered a cruciate ligament injury.

Stéphane was released by the Cherries at the end of 2015/16 season. Zubar was made club captain during the 2016/17 season and scored an extra-time winner in the Dorset Senior Cup final in April 2017. In Summer 2017 Zubar left to seek professional football with Yeovil Town but returned to the Terras in November 2017.

Always felt Ainsworth must have seriously pissed off Adams right after signing over something....

WEYMOUTH boss Mark Molesley says the club are ‘lucky’ to have a player like Lionel Ainsworth, who joined the club prior to the 1-1 draw with Tonbridge Angels on Saturday.

Ainsworth made his Terras’ debut as a substitute in the match, replacing Abdulai Baggie after 61 minutes.

The club are unsure how long he will be at the club, with the winger having been released by Plymouth at the end of last season.

Molesley said: “We are delighted, obviously Lionel has got himself into a position where he needs some football to quickly kickstart his football and himself as well.

“We are lucky from our point of view, that he has found himself without a club and he is looking to play some football just to keep himself ticking over.

“So we don’t know whether it will be long term or short term but what I will say is that we have got a player with a wealth of experience and a player I am sure will excite everyone when he plays.”
