TAKING A LUKE

Stoke City in SEVEN TEAM transfer chase for Plymouth Argyle striker Luke Jephcott along with Wayne Rooney’s Derby County

PROLIFIC Luke Jephcott is on Stoke’s radar but they face stiff competition for the hotshot.

The Potters sent top spy Alex Aldridge to check out the 18-goal Plymouth star, 21.

But Jephcott was also watched by SEVEN other Championship clubs last week.

Wayne Rooney’s Derby County were one of those eyeing him up.

And Sheffield Wednesday are also keeping tabs as they consider a move.

The former Truro City loanee has already earned international recognition.

The Aberystwyth-born ace has three caps for the Welsh U21 side.

Meanwhile, Derby hopes of landing him could be boosted as they emerged as a target for new American bidders as Mel Morris looks for financial help.

A group have looked round the Rams’ facilities in secret after the frustrating delays in the proposed Arab takeover that has now been running for months.

The Championship strugglers already have a large American presence at Pride Park in MSD Holdings, who gave them millions last year.

Luke would want to stay well away from stoke as they would ruin him with their style of football and the fact stoke is a shithole also.

also wednesday are skint as are Derby so whats the point in them looking to bid for him as any bid from them would be add on heavy meaning we would get very little upfront.

He's top scorer in his League, I'd be surprised if Clubs didn'ttake a look.

Whether any of the above mentioned would be a good move for the lad is open to debate.

Bad news when he goes, but we don't have a dodgy shyster in charge so top price is the name of the game.

If he continues and scores 25 this season which is highly likely than close season he'll be off
Hallett though is not stupid and he'll want top dollar up front plus plenty of sell on clauses

£2.5 million ++ and no way will we turn that down

Hardie and Ennis committed to long term contracts which am sure Ryan Lowe had in mind with the probability of losing Luke

agreed, the money upfront is going to be the deal breaker for me as add ons are not a guarantee we will even get all or even some of that extra cash depending on what targets Luke hits. Just look at the Dan Gosling deal he screwed us over when he walked out on his contract with Everton meaning we missed out on 20% of his transfer fee.

I have a lot more faith that the terms and clauses for contracts handed out from late 2019 onwards will mean the club stand a far better chance of being properly compensated, than under the previous circus of a regime.

COULD SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY’S LINKS TO £3.5M MAN

Wednesday are likely to face competition for his signature in the summer, with league rivals Derby County and Stoke City named as other potential suitors, and it’s not even certain that the Owls will have the finances required to tempt Jephcott away from the South West.

Plymouth were quick to get a new deal under Jephcott’s nose after the striker impressed during the second half of the 2019/20 season.
He put pen to paper on a long-term extension during the summer, although the length of the contract has not been disclosed.

At the height of the speculation in January, Lowe stated that any club looking to take Jephcott off his hands would need to cough up £3.5million.

That is a steep asking price for any player at that level, and it demonstrates just how determined Plymouth were of keeping their prize asset.

The chances are that asking price will come down a fair bit once the summer rolls around, but should Jephcott continue his free-scoring form, he certainly won’t be let go on the cheap.

In the current climate, there won’t be too many clubs wanting to splash a hefty sum on a single player, but the Owls will likely have to cough up a decent amount if they’re to win the race for the striker

how can wednesday be in the running for him when they are skint and were facing a transfer embargo only last month. £3.5m upfront followed by £500,000 in add ons with a percentage in his sell on. If a club offers that id snatch their hands off and drive luke to that club myself.

Yep.Difficult times and all that but most other clubs are in the same boat.Argyle have sold players in the past and built promotion winning teams with the income but more often than not selling prize assets has definitely not improved fortunes on the pitch.Jephcott apparently is no hurry to leave and that could be a wise move-it's well possible for people to move to bigger clubs with big squads and lose their way to the detriment of their careers.Keep him for a couple of years and see what transpires-who knows,Argyle may even occupy level or better status than some of the allegedly interested clubs.

I can't ever remember a case where we cashed in on a player and replaced them with anyone close to their ability, usually two or three "good squad players at this level" which always keeps us at the level we are. Also most of Jeppers fee will go towards paying the bills for a season and no way we will suddenly start buying million pound strikers. The best chance we have is persuading Jephcott and the squad that we are very committed to building a squad to get promoted to the CCC in the next two seasons. Despite being a miserable bar steward I think by keeping Jeppers and binning half the defence we should be a top six team next year minimum. It's all about belief.
I'm very disappointed with Halletts statement that Jeppers is available for £3.5m he should have said something like "Luke Jephcott is going nowhere he is instrumental in our plans of building a squad that can achieve rapid promotion to the next level".

I agree.

Cashed in Mariner-got relegated

Cashed in SEB Gosling Halmosi Norris etc-went bust!

There's only 1 Argyle!

As for Cooper, 3 months ago half the posters on here thought he shouldn't even be in the team, now he's going to bring in big money?

Sorry Lowe not Hallett but the point still stands. I did think the amount matched Hallets last and final cash injection kind of spookily and think it would be used for that purpose rather than squad investment.

There is also a reasonable argument that cashing in on Hourihane in 2014 significantly lessened Argyle's automatic promotion chances. The only time it worked was when Waiters sold Colin Sullivan and used the money to sign people like Green,Burrows,Delve etc. Didn't work in the 1950's or 1960's either-just for once in history keep your assets and build around them,a pattern which was followed by all of those cliubs who were once Argyle's peers but who have far outstripped us since.

It's not Lowe's decision to make on how much Jephcott is worth, it's the boards.   Lowe is talking out of turn.

...and if you want to know Hallett's thoughts on how much Jephcott might go for and when he might be sold?  Then join SH in the Zoom rooms on match days,  it is discussed quite often.  Like, every time he scores...

i agree that not all of that money Jephcott would bring in would go into the transfer budget but if we can get a good price for him we can finally have additional funds to strengthen the defence finally as come summertime we will have 1 defender on the books and thats only if Aimson is kept on  i am assuming Sawyer will finally retire in the summer. The sad fact is if a club makes a serious offer for him the club will sell as we arent in a position financially to turn down 7 figure offers.

With a stronger defence which is our achilles heel atm we will be in a better position next season to push on and we have Ennis and Hardie leading the attack and both are capable of getting goals so unlike with previous seasons we dont have a complete tool owning the club and wont allow jephcott's departure when it comes to weaken the side by not sanctioning reinforcements.

The argo tradtion has always been maintained by various shite owners in the past of selling quality cheap and replacing with cack, i'm fairly confident that Community Si, wont go down the same path, though we shall see.

His worth is what another Club is willing to pay.

As no one is likely to offer 100% of the price "up front" it can sometimes come down to the best "terms"offered.

As mentioned, Argyle dipped out on Gosling because the player moved on before reaching a certain number of games (I believe Walton was left out of the Argyle side for the same reason.)

Then there's the cash plus player(s) deals. When Mariner went we took Austin & Peddelty in px.

Austin never fulfilled his potential and Peddelty retired within a short time due to injury. But at least PM got us to a Cup semi final and then promotion.

not only dipped out on his appearance add on but a future sell on clause which at the time we desperately needed the money and he decided to opt out of his contract and we never got a penny.

I seem to remember it was partly Everton's fault because they didn't start contract talks before there was less than 6 months on his then agreement.
