Never saw one until I moved north, The back of Mountbatten Pier is a holding ground for sea trout in the summer, the odd salmon too.
I was a commercial gills netter for a while when I was at school and then waiting for college in the 70s.

Me and my uncle used to have some big sea trout in the mouth of the Yealm whilst netting for Bass in the 70's, Suspect had a 12lb 12ox once, it was like a barrel, never seen a fatter fish and definitely a peel not a Salmon.

I've done quite a lot of fly fishing, was catching mackerel on it this year off the boat, got me some looks.

Mackerel are good sport on a fly rod, used to do it from Ilfracombe in the sixties. Then Mrs PP caught me and that was the end of my fishing days. Still do a spot of birdwatching though, have had an Osprey at the Tamar Bridge and Nightjar and Turtle Dove at Haldon.

I used to fish off the pier there when the mackerel were in,when I was a lad living in Braunton, they've taken it down now haven't they? And they put that big pregnant woman statue up, celebrating the single mother?

I usually fish Bake Lakes (nr Liskeard) for Rainbow trout (mostly stocked of course) , interesting about the Sea trout and Salmon holding around Mountbatten, fished there a few times and seen what i was sure was sea trout jumping.... probably to get the sea lice off.... i guess that means they swim up the Plym past coy pool?
Never used to realize that Sea trout are actually just Brown trout that migrate to the sea and take on a silvery colour.
Did a bit of Salmon farming on the West Coast of Scotland so did once i left school...Marine Harvest and a company called KLD.

I caught a Sea Trout in Millbay docks when I was a kid - back in the days when you were allowed to fish in there, and the water was capable of supporting life. Bloody delicious it was.

Caught one off the Hoe at the Corinthians spit, lost a few more, more time in the air than the sea.

I've caught them spinning off Queeners Point in May, they are hard to hook though, you're right about the jumping. You can't beat fly fishing at night for them, that's a real buzz.

I was inspired by our chat the other day and went out on the boat for an hour or two this afternoon, off Plymouth couple of miles out, saw loads of military and helicopters and jet planes, caught a whiting of about one and a half pounds and got really cold. It was lovely out there though, glassy seas.
Baited feathers btw.

Used to love fishing the Rame Peninsular. If you climb down to Queener Point and go left towards Rame Head, there are a couple of gulleys that regularly yielded Wrasse up to 5lb. No good for eating, but great sport when they're that size.

I used to love fishing for Wrasse using a freshwater set up. Great sport.

Apparently, Wrasse are good to eat. Wish I'd known at the time!

Wrasse are full of bone. After you'd finished chainsawing them up, I doubt there'd be much flesh left. Laughing

Great sport fishing for wrasse with a bass rod too.

Talking of makerel, I caught hundreds of them at berry head. The record was 25 fish in 30 mins, we were using feathers which is kind of cheating. Happy days

I caught six mackerel in the ebb tide just off Picklecombe fort on Saturday, they were a bit on the lean side after spawning I guess but a good size. Must be the latest I have caught Mackerel so close inshore.

Sea temp was only just over ten degrees which is about normal for the time of year isn't it? Funny about the temps thing though, Bass are in the river all year round now, some big buggers as well, but we are getting Cod in good numbers even in the summer. It's all a bit weird.

Put three rods out in Jersey last night, one with a mackerel head on and two with small hooks and mackerel strips, 4 hours and not a fooking nibble!

Anchored in St Helens anchorage off the east end of the Isle of Wight, frozen squid and mackerel available.
Stiff SW breeze, good tide and 3 pouting, 2 whiting and a small dogfish.
A pleasant 2 hours.
