Neal Trotman set to stay but Jamie Reckord and Tope Obadeyi to leave Plymouth Argyle


DEFENDER Neal Trotman has been offered a new contract until the end of the season by Plymouth Argyle.

Manager John Sheridan has also asked Championship club Sheffield Wednesday about extending the loan of striker Caolan Lavery.

But left-back Jamie Reckord has returned to League One outfit Wolves after a four-month stint with the Pilgrims.

And Argyle's League Two rivals Bury will be recalling pacy attacker Tope Obadeyi when his loan spell ends later this week.

Trotman signed as a free agent for the Pilgrims in August and his current deal is about to run out.

The powerful centre-back has become a mainstay of the Argyle defence, making a total of 25 starts in all competitions.

Trotman, 26, had previously played for Sheridan at Chesterfield.

Sheridan said: "I have spoken to Neal Trotman and I would like him to stay. I'm waiting for him to come back to me."

Lavery has made three starts and four substitute appearances for Argyle and scored two goals.

The Northern Ireland under-21 international has formed a good partnership in attack with in-form striker Reuben Reid.

Lavery's loan is set to end after the Devon derby against Torquay United at Home Park on New Year's Day.

Sheridan said: "I spoke to Sheffield Wednesday about Caolan on Saturday and they will get back to me.

"I know they have got one or two injuries striker-wise. Hopefully, it will go our way and we can get him."

Reckord made a promising start when he signed for Argyle on loan at the start of September.

However, the combination of an ankle injury and a loss of form saw him become less and less involved in the first team.

He ended up making 15 starts and one substitute appearance for the Pilgrims.

Sheridan said: "I thought Jamie did really well when he first came in. He played a part in getting one or two good results for us.

"I just think his form dropped a little bit. I think Jamie would say that himself.

"He has had a niggling ankle injury, which he might need an operation on, but he has got on with that.

"He hasn't made that as an excuse. Full credit to him, he has been spot-on in training.

"His attitude was very good, but just one or two performances didn't really go his way and I don't think he picked up from that."

Obadeyi has played eight games for Argyle, including four starts, since signing from Bury.

He has impressed Sheridan, but recently-appointed Bury boss David Flitcroft made it clear that Obadeyi would feature in his first team plans.

Obadeyi will return to the Shakers after the game against Torquay.

His loan officially ends on January 4, which is a day before the Pilgrims play away to Port Vale in the FA Cup third round.

Sheridan said: "Bury are going to take Tope back. We all know that."

The Argyle manager will hold talks with left-back Andre Blackman and midfielder Hamza Bencherif tomorrow.

Both players have short-term contracts which are about to expire and look likely to leave Home Park.

Neither Blackman nor Bencherif travelled with the Argyle squad to their post-Christmas away games against Oxford United and AFC Wimbledon.

That's some churn in players. Hopefully we will get some decent replacements. But everyone will be chasing the same pool of players. What can Brent/Sheridan pull out of the bag?

Sheridan will be speaking to Blackman and Bencheriff tomorrow (hopefully to wish them a happy new year at their new clubs).

JOHN SHERIDAN is keen to bring Crystal Palace’s Jason Banton back to Plymouth Argyle for a second loan spell, The Herald understands.
Palace left-back Matt Parsons is also believed to be on the radar of the Pilgrims’ boss.
Banton has been on loan to League One outfit MK Dons since July but that deal ends on January 5.
He has made 14 starts and three substitute appearances for the Dons and scored three goals.
However, Banton has played only once since late November, which was when he started the 1-0 home defeat of Dover Athletic in the FA Cup second round on December 7.
He was an unused substitute in a 3-1 defeat away to Brentford on Sunday.

If we do not sign these two, we will be left short of players.

I would like to see Banton back.  A nice arrogance to his play.  I thought he left previously under a bit of a cloud or I'm I mis remembering. Strange he wasn't getting games recently at MK Dons.

Probably doesn't knuckle down to the hard graft in training....thinks he knows it all and does his own thing....obviously not a George Best.

I think maybe Shez wants a specialist LB brought in. If Purrington gets injured or dips in form then playing Berry out of position ain't ideal. The good thing is that the young lad has been blooded and come through with flying colours. It gives us options.

Purrington is only 17yrs old....overplaying him during his teens when still growing and maturing could make him into a seven day wonder....doesn't need burn-out at his age.

If we could get those two in, we'll be laughing. Positive news and positive things coming from the club. Turning the corner.

More short contracts and loans, with no mention of looking to hand out some proper contracts of employment to some proper players, as yet another window of opportunity passes by.  It all feels rather messy with little direction. There'll be years of this, and in this division too. Settling down nicely.. Jimmy will be pleased

I agree with my Hairy friend, but we do need these players, it would mean progress if we sign the players Shez wants WHEN we want them. If we wait until the end of January and sign a couple of unknown kids then there is no change. A couple of decent players is what we want not four donkeys to make up the numbers. Lavery must be signed as well.

I think that was the main cause for our relegation's, we have either left it too late to bring in fresh blood or no players have been brought in at all to strengthen the team when it was needed. If Sheridan is allowed to loosen the purse strings now it could pay of big time in the run up to the play offs.

Leaving it too late has been the Jimmy way and will continue to be so. He made sure Fletcher didn't spend his pennies too quickly either. He's not here to invest in the football, he's admitted that.

It's the Tory philosophy, what business calls "just in time" stock levels. Less risk, less service, less entertainment, and slowly less customers, but the top table is still full to bursting. He's running the club like some 17th century estate.

Yes good old brent, has established argyle as a top sixteen fourth division club after two years of his glorious rule, with debts piling up a ministand on the cards, its all good in the fourth division wonderland! playoffs ? not a prayer even in this dogshit division!

I agree Suffered and WG, if Brent had a little vision then he would speculate a little now but I doubt very much that he has the will or desire or even the cash.
