Newport County v Plymouth Argyle MATCH PREVIEW

Liverpool await

Looking at the visitors

Having sat at the top of the league table for the majority of the season, three straight losses for Plymouth Argyle saw them slip down to second as Carlisle United take over at the top, although they have since recovered the top spot. Plymouth will be encouraged by two of their three previous results over the Exiles this season, winning in both the league and the Checkatrade Trophy, with an aggregate score of 7-2, however County’s resilience in the first playing of this tie will cause a few concerns in the Plymouth camp. Newport though need to be weary of Graham Carey who has nine league goals to his name, Jake Jervis has five and Sonny Bradley has three.

Last Meeting

Newport played spectacularly with ten men for a vast majority of the game to get a 0-0 draw away at Plymouth to force this replay after Sean Rigg was sent off early on in the game. County’s back lines held firm against all the odds for the majority of the match despite an onslaught of Plymouth attacks to give the Exiles every chance of a trip to Anfield.

Last Time Out

Newport will be the bottom club at Christmas after falling by three goals to one away at Crawley Town. The home side scored early on and although Newport pulled level thanks to a deflected goal, they were unable to take anything from the game and are now four points adrift of the rest of the field heading into the Christmas period.

Newport County AFC will be putting a Macleod Cover over the Rodney Parade pitch on Tuesday morning as preparation for the FA Cup Second Round Replay with Plymouth Argyle on Wednesday evening.

The Macleod Cover which is being provided by Sport and Stadia Ltd has been used at a number of sporting venues and Football Stadiums including Brighton and Hove Albion’s Amex Stadium. The Macleod Cover will be blown up via a generator being provided by Temporary Power Solutions.

Newport County AFC Chairman of Operations Gavin Foxall said “ Club Officials have been working closely with the Football Association and Rodney Parade staff to ensure the game goes without any issues. The Dome has been at the heart of those discussions given recent problems with the pitch. Our thanks go to all involved.

From Newport fans, they said around 3,000 at the game and only around 500 Argyle fans because of TV and it is a mid-week game

The referee for the replay is Dean Whitestone, who was also the man in the middle for Argyle's FA Cup First Round win against Mansfield and the 2-0 win at Exeter in September.

Argyle Team News

ON-LOAN striker Paul-Arnold Garita is not ready to start games for Plymouth Argyle, even though he returned to action at the weekend after recovering from a knee injury.

The 21-year-old has permission from Championship club Bristol City to play for the Pilgrims in FA Cup ties.

But Garita seems set to be among the substitutes again when Argyle face Newport County in their second round replay at Rodney Parade on Wednesday.

He had been sidelined by a knee injury for two matches before making his comeback off the bench in the 1-0 win away to Accrington Stanley in League Two on Saturday.

Garita returned to training before the game against Accrington after some time back at Bristol City where he received treatment.

Argyle manager Derek Adams told Herald Sport: "He's not fully fit at this stage, but he gives us a good option when he comes on.

"He's Bristol City's player so he went back there to recover and get back to fitness.

"He's obviously not at 100 per cent yet but he's fit enough to take part in training and be in the games."

The FA Cup tie against Newport is the first of four matches in 13 days for Argyle so there will not be much time for Garita to work on improving his fitness levels in training.

Adams said: "We have got a busy schedule so we will just have to assess things as we go on."

Garita and David Goodwillie were both sent on as 69th minute substitutes against Accrington and were paired in attack as Adams switched to a 4-4-2 formation.

It was Goodwillie who provided the assist as Craig Tanner, another player who came off the bench, scored the only goal of the game seven minutes later.

Garita had a couple of chances to get on the scoresheet, and was at the centre of penalty appeals for a challenge on him.

Adams said: "For 21 years of age, he's very strong and he takes the ball in.

"He and Goodwilie have shown in the past they have got a good partnership with different styles of play, and that helps."

Centre-back Nauris Bulvitis was an unused substitute at Accrington after sitting out the previous two matches, including Argyle's 0-0 FA Cup draw with Newport at Home Park, because of a hamstring injury.

Adams said: "He hasn't missed too many games. He has been back in training and looked good."

Left back Ben Purrington has returned to training ahead of Plymouth Argyle's FA Cup second round replay against Newport County at Rodney Parade on Wednesday (7.45pm).

Purrington has not played since the 3-0 defeat by Grimsby Town at Home Park on November 19 because of hamstring trouble.

With Gary Sawyer also out injured, Oscar Threlkeld has been the stand-in for the last five matches.

Argyle manager Derek Adams said: "Ben started training on Monday so we will see how he is and assess things before tomorrow night (Wednesday).

"Gary Sawyer will hopefully be back into full-time training the following week."

Sawyer has been sidelined since he suffered a stomach muscle injury in Argyle's 1-0 win away to Blackpool on August 27.

However, after surgery to repair the damage, Sawyer is now closing in on a return to action.

Midfielder David Ijaha is still ruled out by a stomach muscle injury and under the supervision of Argyle physio Paul Atkinson.

Newport team news.

Where they thought that Sean Rigg would be back for this game, it turned out because of the postponement of their Saturday match he still have one match to serve his suspension after the sending off against us.

NEWPORT County AFC manager Graham Westley will be forced into at least one change for tonight’s FA Cup replay against Plymouth Argyle as young midfielder Tom Owen-Evans is cup-tied.

The Exiles will once again be without Sean Rigg through suspension as he served the third and final match of his three-game ban for his red card in the original tie at Home Park on December 3.

Long-term absentees Lenell John-Lewis and Jamie Turley are also missing but defender Kyle Cameron could be fit to return.

“We should see one or two able to come back in,” said Westley.

“Kyle Cameron had a game last week in the reserves.

“He’s not fully match-fit and certainly I didn’t think about starting him at the weekend but he could potentially come back in to contention.”

Westley also confirmed that Dan Butler is not injured and is available for selection after winger Jennison Myrie-Williams was preferred at left-back for the last two matches.

Update on Argyle travelling fans.

Sources  said Argyle have sold more than 1,000 tickets to their supporters for the replay and Adams is looking for the Green Army to play their part at Rodney Parade.

Travel news

I visited Cardiff and Newport over the weekend the only road works was just by the first WSM turn off, down to two lanes. No road works after the bridge.

SkyBet have placed Argyle as favourites to win at 7/5, Newport are 19/10 to win and the draw after 90 minutes is 23/10.

If scores are level after 90 minutes another 30 minutes will be played, if scores are still level after extra time penalties will be used to decide the tie

I did not read the bit about the pich covering in your opening post (got as far down as the first paragraph in "last time out", so I do apologise for my post :oops).

If the team lose this game, Adams should throw the book at them. I am fairly confident they will pull through though, winning a tight, nervy match by 2-0.

Newport are in a right old mess at the moment and one can see a few yellow cards being dished out tomorrow night.
