If you want to hear something sensible listen to a Brexiteer,

The boss of retailer Next is urging the government to let more foreign workers into the UK to ease labour shortages.

Lord Wolfson, who was a prominent advocate of Brexit, said the UK's current immigration policy was crippling economic growth.

He said firms should pay a tax to employ foreign workers, to encourage them to recruit from the UK first.

The government said it had delivered on its promise to "take back control of our immigration system".

"Unemployment is at record lows and it's vital we continue to bring in excellent key workers the UK needs, including thousands of NHS doctors and nurses through the Health and Care Visa and the Seasonal Workers scheme which brings in the workforce our farmers and growers need," a government spokesperson said.

Free trade?
Lord Wolfson, a Conservative peer, told the BBC: "We have got people queuing up to come to this country to pick crops that are rotting in fields, to work in warehouses that otherwise wouldn't be operable, and we're not letting them in.

"And we have to take a different approach to economically productive migration."

He said that the government needed to decide whether the UK was an open free trading nation, or whether post-Brexit it wanted to be "fortress Britain", pulling up the drawbridge to foreign workers at significant cost to the economy.

"I think in respect of immigration, it's definitely not the Brexit that I wanted, or indeed, many of people who voted Brexit wanted," he said.

"And we have to remember, you know, we're all stuck in this Brexit argument, we have to remember that what post-Brexit Britain looks like, is not the preserve of those people that voted Brexit, it's for all of us to decide."

He added that the majority of people in Britain have a "very pragmatic view" of immigration.

"Yes, control it, where it's damaging to society, but let people in who can who can contribute," Lord Wolfson said

Now there's talk of a closer relationship with the EU akin to the Swiss model which would take us back into the single market again.  Not perfect but at least it's a start and if it happened the only sane thing this effing atrocious government will have done in it's whole miserable time in office.

It is the single market and it just makes it easier to trade between UK and EU and the reason for it is that it's better for both parties. It's funny because a lot of people said it would happen (I did on here several times) yet project fear and it's advocates said no way trade deals take decades.Very Happy
Anyway I can't see it happening yet because the UK will never accept freedom of movement like the Swiss have done just wishful thinking by the remainers at the moment.

There's growing evidence that French rescue services failed to respond adequately to a migrant boat that sank in the Channel last November, with at least 33 people on board.

Only two of the passengers survived the disaster.

Transcripts of emergency calls made to the French coastguard, seen by the BBC, suggest that desperate passengers were repeatedly told to call UK emergency services, despite being in French waters when they first requested help.

And a French police investigation, leaked to the newspaper Le Monde, appears to suggest that the French coastguard never sent help to the scene, despite a specific UK request to do so.

The BBC also heard evidence that another migrant boat was passed back and forth between the two nations' rescue centres, just a few days before the Channel disaster.

Who do we blame for this? Boris, Nigel or the Russians.

The simple answer is that no-one in this country is better off as a result of Brexit - apart that is from the currency traders, hedge fund managers, Tory party donors, the rich who care nothing about anything except themselves.

Brexit polarised the nation, it polarised the Tory party, it was solely responsible for Johnson becoming PM, and in that 3 years, an already creaking government became more unstable under his incompetent leadership, leading to his ignominious departure, followed by a few weeks of even more instability, if that was possible, under Truss.

Instablity in government leads to all sorts of financial issues within a country, higher loan repayments, inflation, higher interest rates, less money for people to spend. There are millions of people in this country who have to choose whether to feed their kids or heat their houses. This is 2022, not Victorian Britain.

Of course, Covid and Ukraine are factors, but the underlying root cause of the financial problems in this country at the moment is down to the polarising effects of Brexit. This country has 5 PMs since 2016. How can we possibly have a stable economy with so much change at the top, and so much change in the Cabinet, with ministers being appointed not for their expertise, but simply because they supported the present incumbent.

Worse still, there is no quick way out. This will be with us for a generation at least. The mindset in this country is that we left that terrible EU, and we'd be much better on our own. Fair enough, how's that working? 6 years on from the vote and the government is still talking about the opportunities afforded by Brexit. Haven't seen many yet - and we're unlikely to, because we have no-one capable of uniting a divided country and taking us to the 'promised land of freedom from the chains of the EU'.

Not that anyone has the slightest clue what that looks like.

And being in the EU didn't polarise the nation and the tory party [and the Labour party for many years as well until Blair sanitised it in the name of electability]?. And how on earth was Brexit in itself responsible for May being so influenced by Remainers that it wasn't going to happen, Johnson eating a bit of cake at a party or Truss being so incompetent that her demise was inevitable? And are there any unbiased figures available as to how much the economic problems prevailing currently were caused by Covid/Ukraine compared to a disunited country?

There are downsides to Brexit but there are plenty of upsides like the small boat crab and fishermen who have bypassed the exporters and are selling the crab and fish themselves straight to the British public and getting about four times the money they used to. Farmers are still getting fook all, indeed less than they cost to produce the stuff snd they need to break the stranglehold of the supermarkets (who have used cheap subsidized produce not only from EU but from worldwide which is killing the planet and our economy) and do the same thing the small fishermen are. There are massive opportunities in fish and meat processing we send fish and meat to the EU who package it and sell it on in our supermarkets. There are no tariffs on importing timber into EU or into UK yet our timber industry is pretty stagnant because we are so reliant on scandi imports we have almost forgotten how to run our own yet we the taxpayers have helped to plant loads of them. Thats just in my sphere of knowledge there are many, many more opportunities for anyone who wishes to stop moaning and get on with life yet we have about half the country who want the UK to fail because they didn't get their way in 2016 boo fooking hoo

Vast majority now acknowledge it was a total disaster and any party who promotes the idea of another referendum will take the hot seat in the next General Election (even the Tories)

Of the people that would actually turn out to "vote" (not the armchair pollsters) you'd see 90% in favour of a return with only the racist 10% holding out

Landslide. Unfortunately the downside is we would have to adopt the Euro and that might put a few off albeit small price to pay though to rejoin our cousins across the Channel

Trouble is there are many organisations involved in project fear grasping every straw in the recession to blame it and the Covid downturn on Brexit. Just look at the figures quoted above absolute fantasy and the only place you would get that result is on a remainer FB page.
Funny how the clever side don't understand once in a lifetime referendum and also quickly forgot the second referendum with Boris's landslide, a third referendum will not happen.

I was reading earlier that you are four times more likely to be a racist if you voted remain, and ten time more likely to have no real friends.

There's no getting away from this total brexit disaster.  The useless tories bang on about growth but this massive act of self harm they inflicted has completely stifled growth and will keep it down while our EU neighbours begin to flourish and prosper again over the next couple of years.  If that's not bad enough, the useless tories are hell bent on making it 100 times worse by continuing to renege on the Northern Ireland protocol that they signed up to under the future trade and cooperation agreement with the EU putting at risk the trade deal with the massive market right on our door step.  Any responsible government would at least rejoin the single market and customs union.  They could do this and not rejoin the EU just to keep the ever dwindling group of brexit headbangers in their party happy at least until the last few eventually evaporate.  In fact it is now inevitable there will be a groundswell to at least rejoin the single market with a couple of years.
