Was sensational when we signed him. But being Argyle we then sold Mariner.

Not sure but I seem to remember first appearence was at Eastville? - the years play mindgames but he was a liitle dynamo!! RIP

Jeez, bit of a shock is that. Lots of hype when he signed and Argyle looked quite promising with him in the team and Mariner up front but we all know what happened next as Pete says. Very high quality player at Liverpool who figured on many of their successes and would have contributed more for Argyle if they had kept Mariner and built around them. Had his own radio show on Plymouth Sound, Monday mornings as I remember. Very sad news, due condolences to his family and friends.

Very sorry to read that. While he was not the most celebrated at Liverpool, his class as an ever-present in a great team was so apparent when he came to Argyle.. Tenacious, low centre of gravity, the ball just loved him in an almost imperceptible way. We've had a few class football acts down here still of their best, Steve McCall was one, Brian was another. His willingness to come this far down to enjoy his life and sport speaks volumes for the player and the club's standing and what it had to offer. Very sad.

Brian Hall coming here was a wow moment that I was probably to young to appreciate how we attracted him here at the time.
Steve McCall was probably the best midfielder I ever seen a green shirt. Blighted by injuries and had no pace but could look one way and pass an inch perfect pass 30 yards the other way. Great memories. RIP Brian.

My memory was that Brian Hall came after Mariner had gone....??

Looking at GoS it seems that Hall & Mariner played in the same side for a short period at the start of the 1976-77 season until Mariner was sold, in fact both players scored in Mariner's last game for Argyle, a 2-2 home draw on 16th October 1976 against Cardiff.
Argyle, under Mike Kelly, were relegated to Div. 3 at the end of that season.

I saw my first ever game during that season, a 2-0 home win against Blackpool who had Mike Summerbee in their side, one of only three appearances he made for Blackpool.

It was nice to see that Brain was in the BBC sport personalities memorial to the sport personalities that past away this year

Sad news.  He was another brilliant Tony Waiters signing.  Both Brian Hall and Paul Mariner are definately in an old team photo for 76/77 season I have still have somewhere.
